Over ons

Geschiedenis Mobiel

Just before the turn of the century, the City of Kortrijk and OCMW Kortrijk were looking for a way to combine poverty reduction, social economy and sustainable mobility. The eureka moment followed in 2000: in the Bloemistenstraat, Mobiel, with two people and as many second-hand bicycles, was launched. Twenty-five years and several formal and substantive transformations later, Mobiel is more active than ever, with numerous responsibilities, services and social partners.
This is the story of Mobile.

2000: establishment by the City of Kortrijk and OCMW

You can safely call the Bloemistenstraat in Kortrijk the cradle of the social economy in the Kortrijk region. It is the place where both Mobiel, Constructief and De Kringloopwinkel started.

In 2000, it hosted the first workshop of Mobiel. The city of Kortrijk wanted to approach the issue of mobility in an ecological way. In addition, the city and the Kortrijk OCMW were also looking for a way to stimulate social economy and offer affordable goods as part of the fight against poverty.

It was also the period when bicycle tourism in South-West Flanders was being promoted more, but services for the cycling tourist had not yet been developed. Mobile offered an answer to these various needs.

2001: bicycle rental students

Students and bicycles: it’s a dream combination. In larger student cities like Ghent and Leuven, it had long been understood that renting bikes to students was a good idea. Mobiel jumped on the bandwagon in 2001 and started renting bicycles to young people who were attending the university(s) and high schools in Kortrijk. A service that still exists today, with every Kortrijk resident recognizing the familiar yellow Mobiel student bike. Over the years, bicycle rental has expanded to include other target groups and grown into the core activity.

2002: opening at the Veemarkt

In 2002, a branch of Mobiel opened on the Veemarkt in Kortrijk, which focused specifically on bicycle mobility in the city of Kortrijk. You could rent a bike there for free. Cycling legend Briek Schotte gave the proverbial starting shot for City-Mobiel. If you look closely, you can see in the photo the very young Vincent Van Quickenborne and Philippe De Coene and then Mayor Stefaan De Clerck. The initiative lasted 12 years and was discontinued in 2014.

2007 - 2012: pioneer Fietspunt and Bluebike

In 2007, Mobiel became one of the first Bike Points in Flanders. A bike point is a bicycle repair place at (larger) SNCB stations for small repairs, bicycle rental, a guarded bicycle parking and information about bicycle tourism or the bicycle route network in the area. Bike points are operated by social economy bicycle companies. In 2012 they were joined by Blue-bike, the bike-sharing system at NMBS stations and stops operated by De Lijn.

2018: synergy with Delta Group

To focus more on its core business, in 2018, Mobiel entered into a partnership created with Deltagroup, which at the time also represented The Thrift Store and Constructive. The synergy consists mainly of support services. In the years that follow, Mobiel will be fully integrated into Deltagroep. This enables a cross-pollination between Mobiel and the other organisations within Deltagroep and also makes the Bicycle Center grow in terms of social employment.

2019: Mobile starts bike school

Education and trainingtogether have been a pillar of Mobile for many years. A Bicycle School was launched in 2019, reaching out to the entire region and focusing on bicycle education. Bicycle riding lessons are a real need for both youth and adults, which continues to gain importance. Especially now that (fast) electric bikes and cargo bikes continue their steep rise and have become ubiquitous, it has become a necessity. At Mobiel, you can learn to repair bikes right away, with a choice of basic skills and specialization.

2020: Mobile shedding

In 2020, Mobiel is shedding its skin. The opening of the renovated store should be the organ point of the organization’s anniversary year, but corona throws a spanner in the works. No official opening ensues, but the frankly fantastically attractive store, which focuses on experience and service, is a reality.

June '24: second-hand, second-hand, second-hand

The summer of 2024 announces a transformation at Mobiel. The organization abandons new bike sales and holds a major stock sale. There, mainly the fleet of new electric city bikes, new electric “all terrain” bikes and electric Urban City bikes will be disposed of. Regular new bikes are also coming into the display window. Mobile is going all-in on used.

Augustus '24: pop-up De Kringloopwinkel

November '24: Mobiel blijft, Perron 2 komt
